Since 2017, her work has been included in several group exhibitions and international film festivals. In 2023, Eva Maria’s work was recognised by the nomination and selection of FOMU Antwerp’s ‘.tiff’ trajectory, the inclusion in the European ‘Futures of Photography’ platform and awarded with the ‘Encouragement Prize for Young/New Cultural Talent’ of the Social Cultural Council of Bruges and in 2024 with the ‘Audience Award’ of SANT. Since 2023, Eva Maria is a resident in De Tank and was selected to be part of the Artistic Panel of platform UFO in 2024 and 2025.

About
The work of Eva Maria Bouillon explores the nuances of interpersonal (family) relationships through a subtle, introspective lens. Drawing from her own family history, she investigates how stories are repeatedly retold from different perspectives, focusing on the unspoken gestures and silences that shape our experience of personal events. Her practice centers around themes such as time, family, and silence.
The scenes in her video works are carefully staged reconstructions of past family moments. Eva Maria works with family members as actors, in clothing that once belonged to her grandparents. These scenographies become tableaux vivants, where past and present intersect. Her background in photography sparked an early interest in frozen moments; through video, she began to explore how time can be made to feel stretched, repeated, and layered.
From one work to the next, the characters change—some age or disappear, while others join the family. This quiet evolution forms a subtle narrative thread within her oeuvre, in which personal history serves both as archive and material.
To consciously create open spaces, Eva Maria often uses pauses between images, such as the structure of slide projection, empty spaces within the frame, silences in sound, and moments of stillness. These spaces invite the viewer to reflect and allow the projection of their own memories, fostering a deeper engagement with the work. Her careful balance between presence and absence creates a contemplative atmosphere, in which the familiar becomes estranged, and the past continuously reflects and reshapes itself in the present.
